Songs to Get You Through

I would call this entry “Potato-Peeling Songs,” but I’m going to err on the side of not abusing that comparison!  I wanted to share some of the songs that encourage and motivate me in those times that it’s all I can do to just move forward.  There’s plenty of music that fits in this category, but I want to focus on those whose lyrics specifically speak of challenging times.  You don’t have to like all (or any) of these, but hopefully my list will give you some ideas of those that speak to you.  I’d encourage you to have yours all together (on a CD, on your iPod, on your cloud player, on grooveshark, where ever) so that they’re ready when you need them.

“Wasted” sung by Carrie Underwood
Wasted by Carrie Underwood on Grooveshark
“I don’t want to spend my life jaded, waitin’ to wake up one day and find that I let all these years go by… wasted.”

“Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)” sung by Gary Allan

Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain) by Gary Allan on Grooveshark
“Every storm runs/runs out of rain, just like every dark night turns into day.  Every heartache will fade away, just like every storm runs out of rain.”

“Stand” sung by Rascal Flatts
Stand by Rascal Flatts on Grooveshark
“When push comes to shove, you taste what you’re made of.  You might bend till you break, ’cause it’s all you can take.  On your knees, you look up, decide you’ve had enough.  You get mad, you get strong.  Wipe your hands, shake it off… then you stand.”

“If You’re Going Through Hell” sung by Rodney Atkins (this is more of a fun one 🙂 )
If You're Going Through Hell (Before the Devil Even Knows) by Rodney Atkins on Grooveshark
“Well you know those times when you feel like there’s a sign there on your back–says, ‘I don’t mind if you kick me–seems like everybody has.’  Things go from bad to worse, you think they can’t get worse than that… and then they do.”

“So Small” sung by Carrie Underwood
So Small by Carrie Underwood on Grooveshark
“It’s so easy to get lost inside a problem that seems so big at the time. It’s like a river that’s so wide, it swallows you whole.  While you’re sittin’ round thinkin’ ’bout what you can’t change, and worryin’ about all the wrong things, time’s flying by, moving so fast.  You better make it count ’cause you can’t get it back.  Sometimes that mountain you’ve been climbing is just a grain of sand…”

“Mountains” sung by Lonestar
Mountains by Lone Star on Grooveshark
“There are times in life when you gotta crawl… lose your grip, trip and fall.  When you can’t lean on no one else–that’s when you find yourself.  I’ve been around and I’ve noticed that the walkin’s easy when the road is flat… them danged ole’ hills will get you every time.  Yeah, the good Lord gave us mountains so we could learn how to climb.”

“Lessons Learned” sung by Carrie Underwood

Lessons Learned by Carrie Underwood on Grooveshark
“Every tear that had to fall from my eyes, every day I wondered how I’d get through the night, every change life has thrown me… I’m thankful for every break in my heart, I’m thankful for every scar.  Some pages turned, some bridges turned, but there were lessons learned.”

“Ride” by Martina McBride
Ride by Martina McBride on Grooveshark
“You wake up from your dreamin’ and you don’t want to face the day.  You can’t find a reason to think your world will ever change.  You can hide beneath the covers… or you can run outside, head up high, and carry on!”

So, there are a few of my favorites… feel free to share some of yours. 🙂
